FORT McMURRAY — A private company is making a major infrastructure investment in Fort McMurray, with $3 million committed this year to improve telecommunications infrastructure in the community.
The investment will support upgrades to both wireless and wireline networks aimed at improving connectivity, reliability and network capacity for residents and businesses.
The local spending is part of a broader $14-billion investment planned across Alberta through 2030.
Telecommunications company TELUS says the provincial investment will include expanding fibre-optic service to more homes and businesses and improving its wireless network.
The company plans to build more than 45 new wireless towers and upgrade more than 400 existing sites across Alberta this year.
TELUS says its $3-million Fort McMurray investment will focus on wireless and wireline upgrades intended to provide faster and more reliable connectivity.
The broader Alberta investment will also support the company’s artificial intelligence infrastructure, including Canadian-controlled computing capacity and platforms for businesses, researchers, public-sector organizations and Indigenous organizations.
TELUS is also planning more than $8.9 million in spending over the next five years to support Alberta content creators through its STORYHIVE and TELUS originals programs.
The company says its Edmonton and Northern Alberta Community Board and TELUS Friendly Future Foundation have provided $12 million in grants to local charities since 2005, supporting 810 projects serving young people.
TELUS says its social programs have helped more than 264,000 Albertans access technology and connectivity programs and supported more than 24,300 health-care visits for underserved residents.
The $14-billion provincial commitment is part of the company’s multi-year infrastructure investment across Canada.
