FORT McMURRAY — Police say two handguns and more than two kilograms of cocaine have been seized following a series of searches linked to organized crime in Fort McMurray.
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams, known as Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams, say officers searched three homes and two vehicles on April 13 with assistance from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Fort McMurray Fire Department.
Investigators say the drugs have an estimated street value of about $242,000 and include cocaine and smaller quantities of illicit prescription pills. Officers also seized $5,320 in cash and took one vehicle as offence-related property.
Police say two handguns and nearly 100 rounds of ammunition were also recovered. Authorities allege the firearms were not lawfully possessed and that some of the accused were prohibited from having weapons under previous court conditions.
Six people are facing a total of 35 charges related to drugs and firearms.
Two of the accused remain outstanding and are wanted on arrest warrants, while the others remain in custody.
Staff Sgt. Mark Wait of ALERT says removing drugs and firearms from the community is a key priority in addressing organized crime and improving public safety.
Police say the investigation began in March after receiving information about suspected drug trafficking in the region.
Members of the public are encouraged to report suspected drug or gang activity to police or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
