RED DEER, Alta. — A late-night search for a burger has ended with an impaired driving sanction after a man called 911 from a fast-food parking lot, asking police to intervene in what he described as a dispute with staff.
RCMP say the call came shortly after 4 a.m. on April 19, with the man reporting he was being asked to leave the restaurant despite insisting he had done nothing wrong.
Officers arrived to find the man and his vehicle in the parking lot. Police say he told them he had driven about 35 minutes for food and was unhappy with how staff had spoken to him.
According to RCMP, restaurant employees had informed the man their systems were down and they were unable to serve him.
During the interaction, police determined the man had been driving and observed signs of intoxication. The man also told officers he had been drinking and was waiting for police while still hoping to get a burger.
A demand was made for a breath sample, which police say the man refused.
The 38-year-old Sylvan Lake resident was issued an immediate roadside sanction and his vehicle was seized under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act.
RCMP are reminding drivers to plan ahead and avoid getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, noting impaired driving remains a serious safety concern on Alberta roads.
