FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP are urging residents to prepare for potential flooding as warmer temperatures increase the risk of high water in the region.
Police say seasonal conditions, including rapid snowmelt and heavy rainfall, can lead to localized flooding, particularly in areas that have experienced high water levels in previous years.
Residents are being advised to monitor weather alerts and emergency notifications, and to assemble emergency kits with essentials such as bottled water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries and important documents stored in waterproof containers.
Officials also recommend clearing eavestroughs, ensuring sump pumps are working properly and moving valuables to higher levels in homes.
The RCMP say households should identify evacuation routes in advance and ensure all members know where to go if an evacuation is ordered.
Police are also reminding residents to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas, noting water depth and currents can be unpredictable.
Inspector Troy Switzer says taking proactive steps can help reduce stress and risk during emergencies.
Authorities say anyone experiencing an emergency due to flooding should call 911, and are encouraging residents to stay informed through local alerts, including Alberta Emergency Alert and the Alberta RCMP app.
