A new Netflix series with a Fort McMurray connection is drawing attention from fans and locals alike. Humberly Gonzalez, a Canadian actress raised in Fort McMurray, stars as Jenna Tate in The Waterfront, a crime drama created by Kevin Williamson. The series follows the Buckley family as their coastal North Carolina fishing empire collapses under the weight of crime, addiction, and family strife. Jenna is a journalist who returns to her hometown, rekindling a complex relationship with her high school sweetheart amid the chaos. Gonzalez appears in all eight episodes of the first season.
Gonzalez’s roots run deep in Fort McMurray, where she attended Westwood High School and found her passion for theatre arts. Originally born in Venezuela, her family moved to Fort McMurray in 2007. She credits the local community theatre scene for shaping her path as an actress. Taking part in school productions and community musicals gave her the encouragement and experience she needed to pursue acting professionally. A pivotal moment came when a mentor in a community production suggested she audition for the National Theatre School of Canada, setting her on the path to further training in Montreal and Toronto.
Before landing her role in The Waterfront, Gonzalez built a solid career with parts in notable productions. She starred in the Netflix series Ginny & Georgia, which aired from 2021 to 2025, as well as the 2020 sci-fi series Utopia Falls. She also appeared in CBC’s Workin’ Moms and several film projects. Known for playing layered and compelling characters, Gonzalez continues to expand her range, taking on roles that showcase both strength and vulnerability.
Gonzalez reflects fondly on her time in Fort McMurray, describing the strong sense of community that supported her early career. She encourages young aspiring actors to believe in themselves and stay true to their own journey. With The Waterfront now available to stream in its entirety on Netflix, Fort McMurray residents can proudly watch a hometown talent shine on the international stage while enjoying a gripping and binge-worthy crime drama.
