Kayakers and Floaters Won’t Be Left High and Dry During Snye Point Construction
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — Much of Snye Point Park in downtown Fort McMurray will be closed this summer as part of a major revitalization and flood mitigation project—but the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says kayakers, floaters and river users won’t be left high and dry.
While the main Snye Point parking lot and pathways leading from Bernard Jean Boat Launch to the park will be closed starting June 9, river access will remain available. The Bernard Jean floating docks and the adjacent parking lot at the end of Hardin Street and Morimoto Drive will stay open throughout construction. The waterfront trail beside Morimoto Drive, connecting to Borealis Park, will also remain accessible to the public.
This means people heading out on the Clearwater River by kayak or inner tube will still have a place to end their journey and access the river. However, starting July 2, motorized watercraft will need to use the Waterways boat launch, as the Bernard Jean Boat Launch will close temporarily.
The Waterfront Park Revitalization Project is part of a long-term municipal effort to enhance public spaces and improve flood protection. Work is scheduled to continue at Snye Point Park until November 15, 2025, with a second phase planned for 2026.
“The revitalized waterfront will be a vibrant, year-round destination,” said Elliot White, Director of Project Delivery and Facilities. “The Snye is an important gathering place for the community, and while construction may cause some temporary disruptions, these improvements will make the waterfront even more functional, welcoming and enjoyable for years to come.”
