Fire Danger Remains High as Crews Battle 60 Wildfires Across Alberta
Alberta Wildfire officials say conditions remain stable across the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region, with little change expected in the weather pattern. The fire danger remains very high in the Fort McMurray Forest Area, while the Lac La Biche Forest Area, which includes southern parts of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, is still facing extreme risk.
In the Fort McMurray Forest Area, six wildfires are active. Four are classified as out of control, one is being held, and one is listed as under control. South of Fort McMurray, in the Lac La Biche Forest Area, fire crews continue to battle the Caribou Lake Fire. The out-of-control blaze has shown little growth in the past day and is no longer seen as a threat to the nearby community of Conklin.
Weather forecasters say temperatures will remain within seasonal norms today, with a possibility of thundershowers later in the Fort McMurray area. The risk of lightning is higher in the Fort Chipewyan region, where two of our region’s largest out of control fires continue to burn.
There are currently 60 wildfires burning across the province, with just under half now considered under control. More than 1,000 firefighters are deployed to the front lines, including a newly arrived contingent from Australia. So far this season, over 600,000 hectares of forest have burned in Alberta.
Alberta Wildfire continues to remind the public that fire bans and restrictions remain in effect across much of the province including throughout the RMWB
