Postal service continues as feds push for mediation in Canada Post labour dispute
Postal deliveries will continue for now as the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) returns to the bargaining table with Canada Post. The decision to resume talks comes one day after the union filed an official complaint alleging unfair labour practices by the Crown corporation.
The federal government is urging both sides to resolve the dispute through negotiation. Labour Minister Patty Hajdu has called on CUPW and Canada Post to return to bargaining with the help of federal mediators, saying Canadians “expect the parties to resolve this dispute one way or another.”
The two sides remain divided on how to move forward. CUPW is calling for binding arbitration, while Canada Post wants the minister to order a vote on its most recent offer. Each has rejected the other’s approach.
In a recent statement, the union said it would resume negotiations “in good faith” and expects Canada Post to do the same. For now, there is no disruption to mail or parcel services.
