Construction begins on waterfront upgrades and flood mitigation in Fort McMurray
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — Construction along the waterfront in Fort McMurray is set to begin next week as part of a long-term effort to improve flood mitigation and enhance public spaces at Snye Point Park.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says the first phase of the Waterfront Park Revitalization Project will see Snye Point Park closed from June 9 to Nov. 15, 2025. Located on the east side of Hardin Street, the park will undergo upgrades including new pathways, enhanced landscaping, and public gathering spaces. The second phase of construction is scheduled to begin in 2026.
“The revitalized waterfront will be a vibrant, year-round destination,” said Elliot White, Director of Project Delivery and Facilities. “The Snye is an important gathering place for the community, and while construction may cause some temporary disruptions, these improvements will make the waterfront even more functional, welcoming and enjoyable for years to come.”
Construction will also affect nearby attractions. The Snye Point Park parking lot and walking paths from Bernard Jean Boat Launch to Snye Point will be closed. The boat launch itself will close starting July 2, so boaters will need to head to Waterways to launch their watercraft. Flood mitigation work near Reach 3 will impact the Father Mercredi parking lot, and raising Hardin Street will affect access to Morimoto Drive and Clearwater Drive. Alternate access will be provided for the Justin Slade Youth Foundation.
