Fort McKay Community Centre Opens as New Hub for Culture and Gathering
FORT MCKAY, AB — After two years of construction, the Fort McKay Community Centre was officially unveiled on Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration attended by local leaders and community members. The 12,000-square-foot facility, located at the west end of Range Road 1109, will officially open to the public on July 1.
Built to host festivals, cultural events, conferences, and community gatherings, the new centre is expected to become a central space for both Fort McKay Métis Nation and Fort McKay First Nation residents. It also aims to promote cultural learning and connection by showcasing the rich heritage of the region. The centre includes a commercial kitchen, a main stage with backstage space, bleacher seating for 300 people, and room for up to 500 guests.
The project was managed by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s Project Management Office in collaboration with WSP Consulting, RKA Architecture, and Clark Builders. With a budget of $16.1 million, it was delivered on time and within its funding limits. The facility uses eco-friendly wood materials designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and includes 115 parking spaces, four of which are accessible.
President Loretta Waquan of the Fort McKay Métis Nation called the new building a powerful symbol of community strength and unity, noting its importance as a space to gather, share meals, celebrate, and pass down culture. Fort McKay First Nation Chief Raymond Powder commended the Métis Nation for its advocacy and thanked the RMWB for fully funding the project and supporting its development.
Mayor Sandy Bowman said the opening of the community centre marks an exciting new chapter for Fort McKay, calling the facility a much-needed and meaningful addition to the region. The Fort McKay Métis Nation will operate the centre going forward.
