Liberal MP Francis Scarpaleggia Named New Commons Speaker
Canada’s newly elected Parliament has chosen Liberal MP Francis Scarpaleggia as the new Speaker of the House of Commons. Selected by secret ballot, Scarpaleggia will preside over debates, maintain order, and serve as an impartial referee in the often-heated chamber. He has represented the Quebec riding of Lac-Saint-Louis since 2004. The Speaker’s role, rooted in British parliamentary tradition and dating back to Confederation, also includes ceremonial duties and the responsibility of welcoming visiting dignitaries. The position comes with perks, including an official residence and a private driver.
