At this weeks RMWB council meeting, a rezoning bylaw was approved to allow a new K–12 Francophone school to be built in Abasand, replacing the current École Boréale. The motion passed 4–3, with councillors Banjoko, Dogar, Grandison, and Lavallee in favour. Councillors Ball, Bussieres, and Wigle opposed. Council heard from 60 submissions, 23 of which were against, citing traffic, construction, and wildfire safety concerns. A municipal survey in March found 111 of 114 Abasand respondents opposed the location. Supporters included 37 speakers, mostly parents, students, and staff, with two from Abasand. Administration said other areas like Parsons Creek or Stone Creek were not shovel-ready and would delay construction. Officials said a shovel-ready site was required to secure provincial funding. The new school will serve up to 350 students and is expected to be completed by 2027.
