RCMP assisting evacuations as wildfire threatens Grande Prairie area
GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. — RCMP are assisting with evacuations as a wildfire continues to threaten areas near the city of Grande Prairie.
The blaze is currently designated as a Mutual Aid fire, meaning the City of Grande Prairie is leading the response, with Alberta Wildfire providing support. Officials say fire suppression efforts and the protection of lives and property remain the top priority, and limited details are available.
Mounties say the wildfire is burning between Township Road 710 and Highway 40, prompting evacuations in affected areas.
The wildfire danger level in the region is rated as very high, a classification under the Canadian Fire Weather Index that indicates dry vegetation can ignite easily and fires may spread quickly with increased intensity, and Alberta Wildfire warns that under these conditions, any new fires are likely to be difficult to control and may escalate rapidly.
Authorities are urging residents to follow evacuation orders and monitor official sources for updates.
Evacuees are requested to register with officials at the Pomeroy Hotel in Grande Prairie. The provincial government recommends that individuals bring essential documents, medications, and medical devices when departing their residence
