Sturgeon County declares local state of emergency as wildfire nears 400 hectares
REDWATER, Alta. — Sturgeon County declared a local state of emergency early Sunday as a fast-moving wildfire near Redwater consumed at least one home and forced the relocation of a herd of cattle.
The blaze, which began south of Redwater near the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area, has grown significantly and is now estimated to be just under 400 hectares. Despite its size, no major highways in the area have been closed, although RCMP are urging drivers to use caution and check Alberta 511 for up-to-date road conditions.
Officials say the fire is being managed under a mutual aid agreement, meaning Sturgeon County is leading the response with assistance from Alberta Wildfire. Provincial resources, including helicopters and air tankers, have been deployed to support local crews as requested.
The fire is the latest reminder of the volatile spring wildfire season, marked by unpredictable weather and quickly shifting conditions. The declaration comes almost exactly nine years after the Horse River wildfire led to the mass evacuation of Fort McMurray, though damage in Sturgeon County has so far been far less severe.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. No injuries have been reported.
