Bonnyville RCMP left cleaning up after bizarre boulder-dropping backhoe rampage
BONNYVILLE, Alta. — Mounties in Bonnyville are dealing with the aftermath of an incident that may one day be studied in “how not to evade police” textbooks.
Just before 7 p.m. on May 3, a male suspect allegedly rolled into the Bonnyville RCMP detachment parking lot, quite literally, in a stolen backhoe. Once there, he dumped several boulders in front of the prisoner bay before taking the opportunity to damage five parked police cruisers.
The man then fled on foot, perhaps hoping the large construction vehicle wouldn’t leave a trail.
RCMP deployed a drone unit and a police service dog to track the suspect, who was found shortly after, cowering in a nearby treeline. He was taken into custody without further incident.
His name has not yet been released, as police say charges are still being finalized.
As for a motive? RCMP aren’t speculating. Whether it was an ill-conceived attempt at a jail break or just a uniquely Centra-Alberta-style outburst remains to be seen.
