A man has died after an encounter with Wood Buffalo RCMP in Fort McMurray on Wednesday afternoon.
Just after 4 p.m., officers were called to a disturbance at a daycare in Abasand, with a similar complaint coming in minutes earlier from a nearby liquor store.
When RCMP arrived, they spoke with the man, who refused to leave. Officers attempted to arrest him, but he resisted. During the struggle, they noticed he was in medical distress.
RCMP say they immediately began life-saving measures and called for EMS. Sadly, the man was later pronounced dead in hospital.
As required by law, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team or ASIRT for short has been called in to investigate. The RCMP say they’re fully cooperating with the investigation and have also launched their own internal review into what happened.
