Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, camping, biking, trail running, or paddling, it’s wise to carry bear spray. It can help lower your risk of injury if you encounter an aggressive bear or other wildlife.
Bear spray should only be used as a last resort — your first priority should always be to avoid an encounter altogether. Make sure you prepare thoroughly before venturing into bear country.
WHAT IS BEAR SPRAY?
Bear spray is an aerosol developed specifically for deterring bears, but it can also be effective against aggressive elk.
It is eight times stronger than regular pepper spray and is contained in a pressurized canister.
Made from chili oil, bear spray is a non-lethal deterrent. However, it causes significant irritation and inflammation to a bear’s mouth, nose, eyes, and throat, making it difficult for the bear to breathe deeply — something it needs in order to maintain a charge.
If you use your bear spray, please report it to Parks Canada so they can assess the bear and ensure it hasn’t been harmed.
Bear spray should be used when the bear is 20-30ft away from you (And always check to see which way the wind is blowing)
Another thing to always check, is the expiry date on the bottom of the can.
