Two fires burning near Birch Mountains as fire danger remains high across northeastern Alberta.
Spring fire season is heating up across Alberta, with fire danger in the Fort McMurray region considered high as warm weather and dry conditions persist.
Two small wildfires are burning in the Fort McMurray Forest Protection Area near the Birch Mountains. One is under control at just one-tenth of a hectare, while the other, about 10 kilometres east, is being held at roughly three-tenths of a hectare.
The southern part of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which falls under the Lac La Biche Forest Area, has seen far more activity. Four wildfires are currently burning there, and about 25 fires have flared up since the start of the year.
The seasonal green-up is still a few weeks away, leaving forests vulnerable to rapid changes in fire conditions with shifts in the weather. Alberta Wildfire is urging residents and visitors to use caution when working or enjoying the outdoors.
