Outpouring of Grief and Support for Young Woman Killed in Fort McMurray Restaurant Collision

FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta — Condolences and tributes are pouring in from across the region for Emily Verge, a 24-year-old woman who tragically lost her life on Saturday. Originally from Clarenville, Newfoundland, Verge had lived in Fort McMurray for several years before losing her life when a truck crashed into the downtown restaurant where she worked.
A makeshift memorial is growing outside the restaurant on Richard Street, where mourners have left flowers, candles, pictures, and notes to honour Verge’s memory. Friends and colleagues describe her as a caring and fun-loving person who touched many lives. Her dedication to her job was recently recognized when she was nominated for a Best Server award in a local publication.
In support of her family, a friend set up a GoFundMe, which has quickly surpassed $15,000, with donations and messages of sympathy arriving from Fort McMurray to as far away as Newfoundland. “Emily had a smile that could light up a room,” one friend shared online. “She brought joy to everyone around her.” “Emily you are the sweetest person I have ever met in my entire life,” wrote another grieving friend.
The community continues to rally, with more donations and heartfelt messages of grief and condolence pouring in for Verge and her loved ones.
