100-year-old church in Fort Chipewyan “completely destroyed”

An early morning fire has burnt down a 100-year-old church in Fort Chipewyan.

Identified as the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Roman Catholic Church built in 1909.

Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to the fire on Thursday at around 2:30 am.

According to RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lacey Blair, fire investigators are on the scene along with additional resources from Fort McMurray to assist with the investigation.

Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief Allan Adam livestreamed the fire on Facebook at 3:20 am.

Allan stated during the video that the historic building was “completely destroyed” and that there was no saving it.

“Over 100 years in history, gone up in flames. This was uncalled for,” Allan expressed.

The investigation is ongoing with more information expected later today.
