The alleged assault of a Regional Chief from a member of the Wood Buffalo RCMP is grabbing the attention of members of the federal government.

Bill Blair, the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and Marc Miller, Minister of Indigenous Services, both expressed their concerns over social media on the allegations made from Allan Adam, Chief of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation.

Adam claims he, his wife Freda, and niece were leaving the Peter Pond Mall parking in March when they were pulled over and assaulted over an expired license plate.

The Mounties say they have reviewed footage captured through the in-car video system and have determined the officers actions were reasonable and did not meet the threshold for an external investigation.

However, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating to determine whether the officers’ actions were reasonable.

Miller says he has spoken with Adam twice and is keeping a close eye on the investigation.
