Fort Chipewyan Receiving Funds To Have Community School Renovated or Rebuilt

Fort Chipewyan is receiving funds to rebuild or replace the community’s school.

The provincial government is providing funds within their 2020 budget for the project.

Currently, students attend the Athabasca Delta Community School which was built in 1986. It’s overseen by the Northland School Division.

Alberta Education spokesperson Colin Aitchison says the tendering process hasn’t been completed yet so they don’t know the exact cost of the project.

He adds a decision on whether to replace the already existing school will come during the design phase.

“Considerations will include the age and condition of building components, the structural integrity of the building and the condition of the site and suitability of the building.”

Before a final decision is made, the province plans on getting recommendations from the school board and the community.
