Alberta RCMP is warning about stolen and re-vinned Ford Raptors.
Alberta RCMP Auto Theft Unit is cautioning the public after investigating three cases involving stolen Ford Raptor pickup trucks. These vehicles had their original Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) replaced and were then sold online or through private roadside sales to unsuspecting buyers.
The incidents occurred in both the Calgary and Edmonton regions. Each of these stolen vehicles holds an estimated value of $80,000.
Despite conducting due diligence, including lien checks and consultations with services like Carfax or Carproof, buyers failed to detect the fraudulent VIN alterations, leaving them unaware of the true nature of the vehicles they purchased.
As the RCMP’s investigations continue, they urge individuals considering private vehicle purchases to take extra precautions by:
- Requesting Identification: Always ask for identification from the seller to verify their legitimacy.
- Choosing Reputable Dealers: Consider buying used vehicles from established and reputable dealers.
- Remaining Cautious: about Unrealistic Prices: Be wary if the vehicle’s price seems too good to be true and thoroughly investigate.
- Trust Your Instincts: If anything about the seller or the transaction raises suspicion, such as cash-only deals or unusual meeting locations and times, be prepared to walk away.
