It’s that time of year again, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has announced Winter Maintenance season has begun.
During the winter months, residential areas in Fort McMurray are divided into four subzones for snow clearing.
Those are then divided into areas that are active during specific days of the week.
Find your residential streets subzone on nearby posted signage or by using the Find Your Zone tool.
Any vehicles left parked in an active zone are towed, allowing municipal crews to properly clear the street of snow.
Over 800 vehicles were towed during the 2021-22 winter season along with over 1000 parking tickets issued.
With the combination of record snowfalls and numerous vehicles left parked in active Winter Maintenance Zones (WMZ) the RMWB considered last winter season to be “more challenging than others.”
“We’re working hard to prepare for this season and will have new replacement equipment ready and more resources for our Pulse team to answer residents’ inquiries,” said Keith Smith, Director of Public Works. “It takes a big community effort every year to make winter maintenance a success – we removed such a mountain of snow from the streets last season that there’s still some that hasn’t fully melted yet.”
All subzones are currently relaxed until further notice.
