This year marks the 10th annual Home Fire Safety Program put on by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Two areas of Thickwood in Fort McMurray are eligible to receive free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Duncan and Cornerbrook have been chosen as this year’s targeted neighbourhoods by the Home Fire Safety Program.
Any homes in those areas with expired, missing, or non-functioning alarms are eligible to receive new replacements.
“This program is an extremely important part of home fire safety, fewer people die or get seriously hurt in a fire when their homes have well-maintained smoke alarms,” said Fire Marshal Nick Brenner. “Unfortunately, home fires continue to happen, which is why we are urging everyone to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly and be aware of potential fire risks.”
Residents in Duncan and Cornerbrook can also sign up for a free fire safety home assessment conducted by Regional Emergency Services (RES) personnel.
The inspection also includes the installation of any needed smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Since the program began, RES has inspected more than 1,500 homes and provided more than 1,700 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms throughout Wood Buffalo.
