UPDATE: In a press release late Monday evening the FMPSD notes that Manorama has received a fourth Schulich Scholarship offer from McGill University for Engineering bringing the total to nine scholarships from six schools for $675,000
Hard work is paying off for a grade 12 student at Westwood Community High School as she sets a record-breaking achievement.
Manorama Joshi, 17, has been offered eight scholarships totaling $575,000 from six different schools.
The University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, and the University of British Columbia all offered Manorama the Schulich Leadership Scholarship for Engineering, which is one of Canada’s most coveted prizes offered to 100 students across the nation.
“Getting the Schulich Leadership Scholarship means I have the freedom to create and focus at university. I feel incredibly honoured to represent Westwood and the region and am proud of how far I have come,” notes Manorama.
“Every journey comes with a steep learning path, especially in the last few years, and I could not have done it without the support of my family, friends, teachers, principals, and mentors who have always guided me.”
She also received an offer of $30,000 for a leadership scholarship at the U of A, two $88,000 entrance scholarships from McGill, $50,000 at Western University, and $19,000 from McMaster University.
“I have no doubt that she is going to continue to make a difference in her future studies and career, and we will be cheering her on all the way,” said Westwood Principal Tifanie Book.
“To see what Manorama has accomplished is inspiring for us all and her achievements are the result of years of hard work and heart.”
Manorama is heavily involved in extra-curricular activities in school. At Westwood, she is involved in the Principal’s Advisory Council, the Breakfast Club of Canada, the Medical Leadership Club, Senior Girls’ Volleyball team, and she is the co-founder and Vice President of the school’s Women in Technology group.
On top of all the extra-curricular activities in school, she is an avid community member. Taking part in the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council, the Financial Director for Youth Computing, in a student-led group connecting students with technology, and is on the United Way Community Investment Team.
“Manorama was always a go-getter. I have seen her grow as a leader, and am not surprised at all about all of the wonderful things she has been involved in or leading,” said Annalee Nutter, FMPSD Superintendent.
Manorama, who is currently competing at the virtual Canada Wide Science Fair, plans to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Engineering at UBC majoring in Computer Engineering.
