One of the few rest stops along Hwy. 881 south of Fort McMurray will soon be receiving an upgrade.
The Alberta Government is making its first round of upgrading highway washrooms throughout the province by converting 10 outhouse-style washrooms at nine locations to flush toilets.
“Motorists deserve to have safe, clean, modern and dignified washrooms as they travel our province’s highways. Improving these highway washrooms will benefit the traveling public, tourists and commercial drivers,” Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Transportation said in a press release.
The locations were chosen based on how remote they were, traffic volumes and proximity to other commercial facilities.
The estimated cost of the project is $1.5 million with one of the upgrades taking place at the stop on Hwy. 881 at the vehicle inspection station just east of the junction of Hwy. 63 and Hwy. 881 eastbound.
The province is planning to upgrade additional locations in the near future.
