One of Canada’s largest scholarship awards, the $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship, has been awarded to a Fort McMurray student.
Rion Schulz, a grade 12 student at École McTavish Public High School was named one of the 100 Canada-wide students selected.
Over 300,000 high school candidates are viable for the award, 1,500 are nominated and only 100 are selected to receive the Scholarship.
The scholarships are awarded to high school graduates that have made the most of their opportunities and that are enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program at partnering Canadian universities.
Rion is a French immersion student and was nominated for the Scholarship by his school, and workplace, Greenplanet Energy Analytics.
He is going to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, specializing in either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta where he’ll receive the Scholarship.
“It is my academic and career goal to align energy technologies that offer global solutions while equally recognizing potential for rural and remote communities. Subsequently, I will focus on meaningful community involvement opportunities that benefit marginalized groups and focus on environmental stewardship. In addition to volunteer opportunities, I will focus on securing employment that aligns with my strong interest in renewable energy technologies,” Rion said in a press release.
Thomas Andrews, Principal, École McTavish Public High School said that they are impressed by how lucky they’ve been with their amazing students and how proud they are of Rion.
“I’ve had the opportunity to see Rion’s progress since he was in grade 5 at École Dickinsfield School and through École McTavish High School. We cannot wait to see the amazing things he does going forward, and the opportunities this prestigious honour opens up for him,” Andrews said.
“In all honesty, we are just lucky to have amazing students and staff body that work well here,” says Andrews. “The success of Rion has set the bar high for what our students are able to do and hopefully his legacy of success will continue onto future students’ success.”
