The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has announced its newest speaker for their Indigenous Speaker Series.
Waneek Horn-Miller is considered one of Canada’s most influential Indigenous athletes.
Not only did Horn-Miller represent Canada in water polo reaching many podiums across the globe, but as a teenager, she had been stabbed in the chest by a Canadian soldier during the 1990 Oka Crisis.
At the age of 14, she protested the planned development of condos and golf courses on Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) lands and burial grounds near Montreal.
The Olympian and Mohawk activist will be discussing her experiences in the 1990 Oka crisis, involvement in the Olympics, and the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
The event will be held virtually for individuals wanting to listen in to hear her stories and ask questions.
Time to Talk: Indigenous Speaker Series is an interactive series put forward by the RMWB to highlight the voices of Indigenous artists, writers, activists, and leaders.
