The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is teaming up with the Wood Buffalo Regional Library (WBRL) to create a virtual book club highlighting Indigenous voices.
Called ‘It’s Time to Read‘, the partnership will focus on featuring the works and voices of Indigenous authors to increase the understanding and awareness of Indigenous culture, history and current issues.
RMWB Indigenous and Rural Relations Director Dennis Fraser says learning is a critical step.
“Through Indigenous authors—by exploring their voices and worldviews, and by
talking through the themes in their writings, we can all find important lessons and points of reflection.”
Sheri Anthony, WBRL Community Engagement Manager says she’s thrilled about the collaboration with the RMWB.
“Books, both fiction and nonfiction, are a powerful tool for education and reconciliation,” says Anthony
“Through this book club, we hope our community expands their awareness of Indigenous experiences, engages with Indigenous history and way of life, and gains a deeper understanding of the effects of colonization and the importance of reconciliation.”
The book club will start up in January 2022, with the first book being Angeline Boulley’s ‘Firekeeper’s Daughter’.
