FORT MCMURRAY — Fort McMurray’s new Walmart Supercentre opened Thursday morning in Parsons Creek, bringing expanded shopping options and more than 150 new associates to Wood Buffalo.
Hundreds of people lined up for the 9 a.m. opening at the new location, which features expanded grocery, seasonal and apparel departments, along with pharmacy, eyewear and cell phone services.
Ary Papadatos, Walmart’s senior operations lead for Northern Alberta, says the new store responds to years of customer requests for more selection.
The store also brings new employment opportunities to the region, with more than 150 new associates joining Walmart to support the expanded operation.
At Thursday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo MLA Tany Yao pointed to the Walmart opening as an early sign of continued commercial investment in the region, saying more major announcements are expected in the next few months from Wood Buffalo Economic Development and Tourism.
Walmart also highlighted its community support from 2025, including $67,000 in local charitable donations and 15,000 pounds of food donated to the food bank. The company also presented $1,000 donations to Second Chance Animal Rescue and the Autism Society.
The new Supercentre marks another major retail investment in Fort McMurray as Parsons Creek continues to grow.
