Premier Smith Exclusive interview with Harvard Media, October 15, 2026
EDMONTON — More than 1.2 million Albertans have already cast ballots in the province’s referendum as voters head to the polls today for Election Day.
Elections Alberta says more than 703,000 people voted during advance polling, which ended Saturday. Combined with special ballots, more than 1.2 million Albertans had already voted before Election Day.
Advance polls saw heavy turnout throughout the week, with 19 locations staying open late Friday to accommodate long lineups.
In an exclusive interview with Harvard Media News, Premier Danielle Smith urged Albertans to exercise their franchise and cast a ballot in the referendum.
“This is your last day to vote (0:05) in the referendum. Both stations are open until 8 p.m. tonight. Please get out and vote.” Smith said.
Polls are open today from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Unlike advance voting, electors may only cast their ballot at their assigned voting place on Election Day. Voting locations are based on a person’s ordinary residence and are commonly located in schools, churches, community halls and other public buildings.
The referendum contains 10 questions, including a sovereignty question asking Albertans to choose between remaining in Canada or proceeding toward a binding referendum on Alberta sovereignty.
The strong advance turnout comes on top of more than half a million special ballots received by Elections Alberta.
Voters who have not yet cast a ballot are being encouraged to attend their assigned polling location earlier in the day if they have flexibility.
