FORT MCMURRAY — RMWB bylaw officers can now stop speeding drivers and issue warnings or tickets as part of expanded traffic enforcement powers introduced earlier this year.
Since February, members of the RMWB Bylaw Services traffic team have had enhanced authority to enforce speeding laws while working alongside Wood Buffalo RCMP on traffic safety across the region.
The two agencies have worked together for several years on traffic education and enforcement, including school zone safety, e-scooters and the off-highway vehicle pilot program and expansion.
RCMP say the partnership is intended to reduce dangerous driving, prevent collisions and provide consistent safety messaging to motorists and other road users.
“Keeping our roads safe requires a collective effort,” said Sgt. Liz MacDonald, who heads Wood Buffalo RCMP Municipal Traffic Services.
“By working alongside our partner agencies, like the RMWB Bylaw Services’ Traffic team, we are able to bring together different areas of expertise with one common purpose: preventing collisions, reducing risky driving behaviours and ensuring everyone using our roadways has the opportunity to arrive at their destination safely.”
Police are reminding drivers to obey posted speed limits and adjust their speed for road and weather conditions.
Motorists are also being urged not to drive while impaired, to put mobile devices away, ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained and give emergency personnel, roadside workers and enforcement officers additional space.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say the agencies will continue using co-ordinated enforcement, education and public awareness efforts to reduce risky driving throughout the region.
