FORT MCMURRAY — Recycling carts are starting to change hands across Wood Buffalo this week as the Regional Municipality begins removing its existing bins ahead of a new collection system.
Residents are being asked to put their current RMWB recycling carts out on their regular collection day as the municipality prepares for Circular Materials to take over residential recycling Oct. 5.
Light blue recycling carts will be collected from Sept. 22 to 25, while dark blue carts will be removed from Sept. 29 to Oct. 2.
The municipality says both existing carts will be permanently removed and residents should leave them out until they are picked up. Collection may continue into the evening or the following day.
Anyone who misses the scheduled pickup can take the old carts to the public drop-off area at the landfill free of charge until Dec. 31.
New Circular Materials carts are also being delivered beginning this week.
The new carts have the same 240-litre capacity as the existing RMWB carts, but residents will be able to place all accepted recyclable materials together in one bin.
Circular Materials is taking over residential recycling under Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility regulation, which shifts responsibility for managing and funding residential recycling from municipalities to producers of recyclable packaging and paper products.
Collection schedules will also change in some communities.
Recycling will be collected weekly in Fort McMurray, Anzac, Draper, Gregoire Lake Estates and Saprae Creek Estates.
Conklin, Fort McKay and Janvier will move to collection every two weeks.
Residents are being encouraged to check their new collection schedule before service begins Oct. 5.
