FORT MCMURRAY — The wildfire danger remains high in Fort McMurray as warm late-summer temperatures continue across the region.
Alberta Wildfire says recent rainfall has added some moisture to parts of the Fort McMurray Forest Area, but conditions could dry out again through the weekend.
The wildfire danger is currently moderate in Fort Chipewyan and Fort Fitzgerald.
There are no active wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
Since Jan. 1, there have been 54 wildfires in the region.
With hunting season underway, Alberta Wildfire is reminding people heading into the backcountry to make sure campfires are fully extinguished before leaving a site or going to bed.
Campfires should be soaked with water, stirred and soaked again until the ashes and coals are cool to the touch.
Off-highway vehicle users are also being asked to take precautions in dry conditions.
Alberta Wildfire recommends stopping frequently to clear grass, mud and other debris from hot areas on vehicles, carrying firefighting equipment such as a shovel, pail and fire extinguisher, and avoiding parking in tall grass.
Officials say heat from exhaust systems can ignite dry vegetation and recommend parking on bare ground or gravel whenever possible.
