FORT MCMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will begin permanently removing its existing recycling carts later this month as curbside collection transitions to a new provider.
Circular Materials will take over residential recycling collection Oct. 5 under Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility regulation, which shifts responsibility for managing and funding residential recycling from municipalities to producers of recyclable packaging and paper materials.
Residents are being asked to place their existing RMWB recycling carts out on their regular collection day between Sept. 22 and Oct. 2.
Light blue recycling carts will be collected from Sept. 22 to 25, while dark blue carts will be picked up from Sept. 29 to Oct. 2.
The municipality says both existing carts will be permanently removed and residents should leave them out until they are collected, as pickups may continue into the evening or following day.
Residents who miss their scheduled collection can bring their RMWB recycling carts to the public drop-off area at the landfill free of charge until Dec. 31.
Circular Materials will begin delivering new recycling carts to homes starting Sept. 22, ahead of the Oct. 5 transition.
The new carts will have the same 240-litre capacity as the existing RMWB recycling carts, and all accepted recyclable materials can be placed together in the new container.
Collection schedules will also change when Circular Materials takes over.
Recycling will be collected weekly in Fort McMurray, Anzac, Draper, Gregoire Lake Estates and Saprae Creek Estates.
Collection will take place every two weeks in Conklin, Fort McKay and Janvier.
Residents are being encouraged to check their new collection schedules before service begins in October.
Circular Materials is also expected to mail information directly to households and provide additional communication ahead of the transition.
