EDMONTON — Alberta RCMP say 125 impaired drivers were removed from provincial roadways during enhanced enforcement over the Labour Day long weekend.
Police say 85 drivers received Immediate Roadside Sanctions for failing roadside tests, while 26 received warnings and 11 were handed 24-hour suspensions.
Three novice or commercial drivers were also removed from the road after receiving zero-tolerance sanctions.
RCMP issued 1,125 traffic violation tickets during the enforcement period, including 576 for speeding, 24 for distracted driving and 21 for seatbelt violations.
Despite the enhanced enforcement, police say there were three injury collisions and two fatal collisions over the long weekend.
Two people were killed.
“Every road fatality is avoidable,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services.
“Everyone should have been able to make it home safely this past weekend. If someone is about to drive impaired or make an unsafe choice behind the wheel, speak up. A simple conversation can save a life.”
