EDMONTON — Alberta’s 15-year-old students are among the top performers in Canada and internationally, according to the latest results from a global assessment of reading, mathematics and science.
Results from the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, show Alberta ranked first among Canadian provinces in science and reading and second in mathematics, behind Quebec.
Alberta students scored above both Canadian and international averages in all three subjects.
The province recorded an average science score of 520, compared with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development average of 482.
Alberta students scored an average of 499 in reading, above the OECD average of 461, while the province’s mathematics score was 489, compared with the OECD average of 463.
Education and Childcare Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says the results reflect the work of students, teachers, families and school communities across Alberta.
“These outstanding results show Alberta students continue to excel on the world stage,” Nicolaides said. “Alberta’s government will continue to provide students with the strong foundation they need for future success.”
The province says Alberta’s results were comparable with leading international education systems including Singapore, Japan, Korea and Estonia, with several results statistically tied.
PISA assesses 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics and science and is conducted every four years.
The 2025 assessment included students from 83 countries.
The province says continued participation allows Alberta to compare student achievement with national and international standards and identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvements in curriculum and classroom instruction.
