FORT MCMURRAY — Prime Minister Mark Carney is gathering his cabinet in Banff this week as his government pushes to move major projects ahead faster and accelerate its broader economic agenda.
The two-day fall Cabinet Planning Forum begins Thursday and will bring together cabinet ministers and secretaries of State to review the government’s progress and determine its next steps.
The Prime Minister’s Office says the government intends to maintain its current direction despite what it describes as serious economic headwinds, with a focus on building Canada’s domestic economic strength while diversifying its international trade and defence relationships.
A central part of that approach has been speeding up major infrastructure development.
Since taking office, Carney’s government has pursued what the Prime Minister’s Office describes as bold changes, including advancing new major infrastructure projects, introducing a Defence Industrial Strategy and creating a new tax credit aimed at making Canadian businesses more competitive.
The government says it has also been working to diversify Canada’s trade and defence relationships abroad.
The Banff meetings will now focus on moving that agenda forward.
Cabinet ministers will hear from experts on the economy, Indigenous partnerships and global affairs as they assess the government’s progress and identify its next actions.
The Prime Minister’s Office says cabinet will “double down” on delivering its agenda, with the government emphasizing greater speed and ambition in building Canada’s economy.
The forum runs Sept. 10 and 11.
