FORT McMURRAY — An Edmonton man is facing a drug trafficking charge after a traffic stop in downtown Fort McMurray led to the seizure of suspected cocaine and cash.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say members of the Crime Reduction Unit were patrolling downtown on Aug. 27 when they stopped a vehicle near Richard Street after allegedly seeing a driver using a cellphone.
Police say observations made during the traffic stop led officers to begin a drug investigation and the driver was arrested without incident.
RCMP say officers seized 67 grams of suspected cocaine and $2,600 in Canadian currency.
Nasir Siraj Hassan, 35, of Edmonton, is charged with trafficking.
Hassan was held for a judicial interim release hearing and has since been released on conditions. He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Sept. 29.
“The effects of drug trafficking extend far beyond those directly involved in the drug trade,” Wood Buffalo RCMP Insp. Mike Robinson said.
“Illegal drugs contribute to crime, victimization, and community harm.”
Robinson said the arrest reflects the work being done by officers to address drug-related activity and improve community safety.
“We remain committed to disrupting those who profit from the sale of illegal drugs and encourage residents to report suspicious activity to police,” he said.
