FORT McMURRAY — Only one wildfire remains active in the Fort McMurray Forest Area, although the wildfire danger across the region remains high.
Alberta Wildfire says MWF-047 is approximately 0.1 hectares in size and is classified as under control.
The wildfire is burning south of the Birch Mountains, about eight kilometres southwest of Namur Lake.
It is the only active wildfire in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
There have been 51 wildfires in the forest area since Jan. 1.
Despite the limited wildfire activity, officials say conditions remain favourable for new fires to ignite and spread.
Residents and visitors are being asked to use caution while outdoors and avoid activities capable of producing sparks or starting a wildfire.
Alberta Wildfire is also reminding people to use designated stoves, fire rings or fire pits when camping in developed recreational areas.
When camping outside designated sites, campfires should be located away from dry grass, vegetation and low-hanging branches, with the area cleared down to bare mineral soil.
Campfires should never be left unattended and must be fully extinguished by soaking the ashes, stirring them and soaking them again until they are cool to the touch.
Alberta Forestry will also be attending two upcoming community events to provide information about wildfire prevention, operations and FireSmart practices.
The Fort McKay Trade Show is scheduled for Sept. 10, followed by the Regional Emergency Services Pancake Breakfast on Sept. 12.
