FORT McMURRAY — An investigation is underway following a serious collision involving five people on Highway 63 north of Fort McMurray.
RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney confirmed Sunday the number of people involved and stated that at least one person was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the collision.
The crash occurred on Highway 63 between Fort McMurray and Fort McKay. Eyewitnesses place the scene between Parsons Creek and Supertest Hill.
Northbound lanes of Highway 63 were initially impassable as emergency crews responded to the collision, prompting RCMP to ask motorists to not attempt travel on the road.
The highway has since reopened to traffic.
An RCMP collision reconstructionist was called to the scene as part of the investigation.
Police have not released further information about the condition of those involved or the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The investigation remains ongoing.

Eyewitness reports say the collision is just north of Fort McMurray near the sawmill. Traffic to the oil sands sites north of Fort McMurray are not accessible according to witnesses.

FORT McMURRAY — The northbound lanes of Highway 63 are closed between Fort McMurray and Fort McKay as Wood Buffalo RCMP respond to a serious collision.
Police say officers are currently on scene and the northbound lanes are not passable.
Drivers are being asked to take an alternate route.
An RCMP collision reconstructionist is on the way to the scene.
Few other details are available at this time, including the number of vehicles involved or whether anyone has been injured.
Motorists are being directed to Alberta 511 for the latest information on the highway closure.
