EDMONTON — Alberta RCMP and Search and Rescue Alberta are reminding residents to plan ahead and carry proper safety equipment as more people head outdoors during the warmer spring and summer months.
Officials say Albertans exploring parks, trails, lakes and backcountry areas should research routes in advance, check weather conditions and prepare for emergencies before leaving home.
Search and rescue officials are also encouraging outdoor enthusiasts to leave detailed travel itineraries with someone they trust, including route information, expected return times, emergency contacts and vehicle descriptions.
Police say many remote parks and recreational areas across Alberta lack reliable cellphone coverage, making satellite communication devices an important safety tool for hikers, campers and backcountry travellers.
Emergency responders are also advising people to carry proper footwear, extra clothing, food, water, flashlights and basic emergency shelter supplies in case conditions change suddenly or an unexpected overnight stay becomes necessary.
“Planning and preparedness are your best defence in emergency situations,” Alberta RCMP Const. S.J. said in a statement.
Police say being properly prepared not only improves personal safety, but can also help search and rescue teams respond more quickly during emergencies.
Search and Rescue Alberta says detailed trip plans can significantly reduce response times if someone becomes lost or injured outdoors.
The organization represents 33 volunteer search and rescue teams operating across Alberta and coordinates ground and inland water rescue incidents under the province’s Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services.
Officials are also reminding Albertans to wear bright or reflective clothing when outdoors, particularly in low-light conditions or overnight situations.
