FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP are investigating several incidents involving dirtbikes allegedly stunt driving and fleeing police in the Timberlea area late last month.
Police say Municipal Traffic Services officers, assisted by a remotely piloted aircraft system, commonly known as a drone, were conducting patrols around 3:30 p.m. April 29 when they spotted a dirtbike allegedly stunt driving on Carteret Drive.
RCMP say officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled “with complete disregard” for public safety.
About 45 minutes later, police say officers observed three additional dirtbikes travelling on Rainbow Creek Drive.
According to RCMP, none of the dirtbikes displayed licence plates and one rider was not wearing a helmet.

Police attempted another traffic stop, but all three riders fled.
RCMP say officers did not pursue the dirtbikes in either incident because of the risks posed to the public and the riders themselves.
Investigators say drone technology was used to capture images of both the dirtbikes and riders involved.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say they continue seeing an increase in dangerous off-highway vehicle use despite increased patrols and ongoing public safety messaging.
Police are reminding residents off-highway vehicles are prohibited on roads in Fort McMurray outside the Abasand neighbourhood, as well as on sidewalks, parks, green spaces and urban trails.
RCMP say illegal off-highway vehicle use can lead to serious injury or death and may result in criminal charges and fines.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
