JANVIER — Mobile mammography clinics will visit Janvier and Fort McMurray First Nation later this month as Alberta health officials work to improve breast cancer screening access in rural and remote communities.
Primary Care Alberta says the Screen Test mobile mammography service will stop in Fort McMurray First Nation on May 27 at the Health Centre on Raven Lane before travelling to Janvier on May 28 at the Father R. Perin Community School parking lot.
The screening program is available at no cost for eligible individuals between the ages of 45 and 74, though appointments are required.
Transportation assistance will also be available for residents attending the Fort McMurray First Nation clinic.
Officials say mammograms remain one of the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer early, when treatment outcomes are often better.
A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays to examine breast tissue and can help identify cancer before symptoms develop.
The province says the mobile screening service is designed to improve access for people living in communities where permanent mammography services are not readily available.
In addition to the mobile clinics, breast cancer screening is also available through some hospitals and radiology clinics across Alberta.
Residents interested in booking appointments or learning more about eligibility are being encouraged to contact the Screen Test program directly.
Primary Care Alberta says individuals should also discuss personal breast cancer risks and screening options with healthcare providers.
