FORT McMURRAY — Street sweeping and line painting are getting underway this week across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, with crews set to clean roads and refresh markings as spring maintenance ramps up.
Municipal officials say line painting will take place primarily in the evenings and overnight to reduce disruption, though drivers can still expect lane closures and slower traffic in some areas.
Work in the coming days is scheduled for several major routes, including Thickwood Boulevard, Confederation Way, Franklin Avenue, Hospital Street, Gregoire Drive and Loutit Road, among others.
Drivers are being urged to avoid crossing freshly painted lines, as wet paint can stick to tires and damage the markings. The line painting program is expected to be completed by early June, weather permitting.
Street sweeping has already begun on bus routes and high-traffic roads, with crews set to expand to additional priority areas starting May 7 as temporary no-parking signs are posted.
Officials say parking restrictions will be in effect on streets scheduled for sweeping, with signs placed 24 hours in advance. Vehicles left on the road during posted restrictions may be ticketed or towed to allow crews to complete the work safely and efficiently.
The municipality says sweeping will move through neighbourhoods in stages, beginning with Abasand and Grayling Terrace, followed by Dickinsfield, Wood Buffalo, Thickwood and other areas, before shifting to residential streets.
Residential street sweeping is expected to continue through mid- to late June, while rural areas are scheduled to begin in mid-May, depending on weather and road conditions.
Officials are reminding residents to follow posted signage, keep a safe distance from equipment and be aware that dust from sweeping operations may reduce visibility.
More information, including neighbourhood schedules and updates, is available through municipal channels.
