EDMONTON — The start of May marks Alberta’s Forest Week, with provincial officials highlighting the importance of sustainable forest management and the role forests play in the province’s economy and environment.
The government says Alberta is home to some of the most expansive and diverse forests in the world, supporting biodiversity, healthy ecosystems and economic activity across rural communities.
Officials say responsible forest management remains a priority, with ongoing work involving industry, Indigenous communities, parks and other partners to maintain forest health and resilience.
The week also coincides with the 10-year anniversary of the Horse River Wildfire, which triggered the largest wildfire evacuation in Alberta’s history and displaced more than 80,000 residents and workers.
The government says the anniversary serves as a reminder of the response from first responders, volunteers and residents, as well as the long-term impact of the wildfire on the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo region.
Officials say investments have been made in wildfire prevention, mitigation and response capacity, including building fireguards, reducing fuel loads and expanding FireSmart practices in at-risk communities.
They say Alberta’s wildfire response capacity has strengthened in recent years, with efforts focused on preparing for future emergencies.
The province is also encouraging residents to take part in Forest Week by spending time outdoors and learning more about Alberta’s forests.
According to government figures, forest product manufacturing contributed about $4 billion to Alberta’s gross domestic product in 2024, while capital and repair projects in the sector have generated an estimated $7 billion in investment over the past decade.
Officials say protecting forests will require continued collaboration between governments, industry and communities to ensure long-term sustainability.
