FORT McMURRAY — A community walk aimed at raising awareness about workplace safety and supporting families affected by tragedy is set to take place this weekend in Fort McMurray.
The Steps for Life walk will be held Saturday, May 2, 2026, bringing residents together for a five-kilometre event focused on remembering lives impacted by workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities.
Organizers say the annual event is part of a national campaign led by Threads of Life, a charity that supports families coping with the aftermath of workplace tragedies.
On any given day in Canada, three families learn a loved one will not return home from work, while thousands more experience life-altering injuries or illnesses.
The walk is open to all members of the community, including families, friends, co-workers and local organizations, with participants encouraged to join in person or take part virtually.
Registration opens at 10 a.m., with opening ceremonies scheduled for 11 a.m. The event will also include a barbecue and a 50-50 draw.
Funds raised through Steps for Life support Threads of Life programs, which provide peer support, education and resources to more than 4,000 families across Canada.
Last year’s campaign raised nearly $1.2 million nationally, helping to fund services and increase awareness about workplace injury and illness prevention.
Organizers say the Fort McMurray walk is one of many being held across the country this spring, as communities come together to promote safer workplaces and support those affected by workplace tragedies.
