ANZAC, Alta. — The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo has announced a new naming partnership with Fort McMurray 468 First Nation for the arena at the Anzac Recreation Centre.
The facility will now be known as the Fort McMurray 468 First Nation Arena, a venue the organization says serves as a central hub for ice sports and community events in the area.
Chief Neil Cheecham said the partnership reflects a longstanding relationship between the First Nation and the recreation centre.
“The facility has hosted numerous Nation gatherings, cultural activities, and community events that have brought our members together and strengthened connections across the region,” Cheecham said.
He said the decision to become a naming partner also recognizes the importance of shared spaces used by members across neighbouring communities.
“Becoming the naming partner for the arena reflects our continued commitment to investing in shared community spaces that promote inclusion, participation, and regional connection,” he said.
Cheecham added the visible presence of the Nation’s name at the arena is expected to foster pride and a sense of belonging among members.
The partnership will also support youth programming, with five per cent of proceeds from amenity partnerships directed to the WB Kids program, which aims to reduce financial barriers to sport, recreation and cultural participation.
RRC chief executive Graig Walsh said the agreement builds on years of collaboration.
“We are very excited to welcome Fort McMurray 468 First Nation as the new partner on the arena in Anzac,” Walsh said.
“Since the opening of the recreation centre in Anzac we have had many opportunities to work collaboratively with the Nation and this new partnership is another great step in the evolution of this relationship.”
The Anzac Recreation Centre, presented by CNOOC, is located south of Fort McMurray and hosts thousands of visitors each year.
