EDMONTON — The Alberta NDP are outlining a new energy policy as global oil markets increasingly view Canada as a potential stabilizing force amid ongoing volatility.
Leader Naheed Nenshi released the first elements of the party’s plan Friday, positioning it as a long-term strategy to expand export capacity, strengthen energy security and address affordability concerns tied to the sector.
In a video presentation, Nenshi said the province needs more consistent and predictable leadership to reduce uncertainty and support growth in the energy industry. “We’re in a time of global uncertainty, but here in Alberta, too much of that uncertainty is self-inflicted,” he said. “It’s time to show Albertans what our energy sector can look like under strong, steady, competent leadership. It’s time to build Alberta’s energy future.”
The proposal includes optimizing the Trans Mountain Expansion to add more than 300,000 barrels per day of capacity, as well as exploring a new West Coast pipeline route, potentially along the existing corridor to British Columbia’s southern coast.
The NDP also propose revisiting large-scale national projects such as Energy East pipeline and expanding export routes in multiple directions to meet rising global demand for Canadian oil and gas.
The plan calls for increased natural gas export capacity, alongside investments in renewable energy hubs, energy storage and expanded electricity interties to allow Alberta to import and export power more efficiently. It also includes developing a critical minerals industry aimed at attracting investment and creating jobs.
Nenshi linked energy policy directly to household costs, pointing to electricity bills, heating expenses and fuel prices as areas affected by instability in the sector. “Families feel the consequences of energy instability every single day, on their power bills, in their heating costs, and every time they fill up at the gas pump,” he said. “When government creates chaos, Albertans pay for it.”
He said the plan is intended to improve long-term stability and affordability. “This plan is about building stability, competitiveness, and affordability into Alberta’s energy future. This is the future Albertans deserve, and it’s the future Alberta’s New Democrats are ready to deliver.”
The announcement comes as policymakers and industry analysts continue to assess Canada’s role in global energy markets, particularly as geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions influence oil and gas demand.
